About This Website & Edition History

How tipitaka2500.github.io evolved from an early static HTML conversion into a complete, deterministically verified digital reconstruction of the 2020 World Tipiṭaka Edition.

1. The World Tipiṭaka Edition

The World Tipiṭaka Edition (Mahāsaṅgīti Tipiṭaka Buddhavasse 2500) represents the 40-volume Roman-script edition of the Pāḷi Tipiṭaka produced by the M.L. Maniratana Bunnag Dhamma Society Fund under the patronage of His Holiness Somdet Phra Ñāṇasaṁvara, the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand.

Derived from the Chaṭṭhasaṅgīti (Sixth Buddhist Council) text convened in B.E. 2500 (1957), the Roman-script edition underwent four complete cycles of canonical Pāḷi recitation and computer-assisted proofreading to verify all 2,708,706 Pāḷi words (20,606,104 Roman letters) across the 88 books of the Vinayapiṭaka, Suttantapiṭaka, and Abhidhammapiṭaka. For the complete historical timeline and linguistic innovations of the project (1893–2024), see The World Tipiṭaka Project & Its History →.

2. First Generation: Yuttadhammo Scrape & Python Conversion

The initial version of tipitaka2500.github.io was built from Bhante Yuttadhammo’s archival repository, which preserved a scrape of the original Tipiṭaka website (2005 edition).

Using a series of custom Python conversion scripts, those archival files were cleaned, reorganized into a hierarchical folder structure matching the canonical divisions of the 40 volumes, and wrapped in a static Bootstrap user interface with collapsible sidebar navigation and light/dark theming. While this made the Roman Pāḷi text fast and readable on the modern web, it lacked the critical apparatus footnotes, cross-references, and scholarly reference indices introduced in the updated 2020 edition.

3. Current Generation: Re-Scraped from OpenPāḷi & Built with Astro (2020 Edition)

This updated version of the site is based on a fresh, complete scrape of the OpenPāḷi project, bringing the website fully up to date with the 2020 edition while adopting a modern static architecture powered by Astro:

  • 100% Verified Canonical Content: The Pāḷi body text across all 20,189 section pages and 118,280 canonical paragraphs has been deterministically compared and verified against the previous repository to guarantee that the core canonical text is identical.
  • Clean Vanilla HTML Source: All 20,189 HTML files in tipitaka/ are stored as clean, semantic, standards-compliant HTML5 without presentation framework bloat, while Astro provides the site layout, navigation, Rosely light/dark theme, and client-side interactivity.
  • Critical Apparatus Footnotes & Linked Cross-References: Every page now includes its canonical footnotes (26,529 critical apparatus notes collating Sīhaḷa, Syāmaraṭṭha, Kambuja, Maramma, and PTS editions) with inline preview popovers and 7,938 live cross-reference links that jump directly to the cited book and paragraph.
  • Complete 2020 Reference Indices & Concordances: The site now includes interactive, searchable editions of the five reference databases from the 2020 edition.
